Thomas Tuchel confirms £22m Chelsea man won’t play tomorrow v Aston Villa

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed in his Tuesday press conference that Edouard Mendy won’t be playing tomorrow against Aston Villa.

The Blues are preparing to host Premier League rivals Villa on Wednesday night in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Chelsea beat Villa 3-0 earlier in September at Stamford Bridge in the league meeting, but the clubs will now lock horns again in a domestic cup competition.

Tuchel has given the update that number one goalkeeper Mendy will be unavailable. He confirmed that he will not be fit against Villa, but he should be returning to individual training this week.

In addition, he explained it’s “possible” he’s back in time for the league showdown with Manchester City this Saturday. But, it’s considered a “race against time”.

The goalkeeper was absent at the weekend because of a hip problem, but understudy Kepa Arrizabalaga stepped in without any fuss in the 3-0 win against Tottenham.

Kepa, 26, is fighting back from adversity to show he’s part of a strong goalkeeping unit currently working together at Stamford Bridge.

For Chelsea fans, most were unaware of Mendy when he was signed from French club Rennes last summer for £22 million.

However, fast forward to now and he’s regarded as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers.

The 29-year-old colossus is such a commanding figure in net that breathes confidence to the defence in front of him. He’s a great shot-stopper with real agility, plus he continues to get better with the ball at his feet with more work in training.

His record of 29 clean sheets in 50 Chelsea appearances is staggering
